Building and wall collapses in Kano
Overview
A series of structural failures in Kano State has resulted in casualties and emergency rescues. In July, a fencing wall collapsed during the demolition of a residential building in the Kofar Mata Zango area, trapping one worker who was subsequently rescued and treated.
In early August, a residential building measuring approximately 20 by 30 feet collapsed in the Dan Dishe, Kwanar Yashi area of Fagge Local Government Area. The Kano State Fire Service rescued 16 people, including 13 who were alive—six of whom were children—and three unconscious children.
On August 15, 2026, two separate collapses occurred in the Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas, reportedly during heavy rainfall. In Gaida, Kumbotso, a 50 by 50 foot building under construction fell on six workers, resulting in the deaths of four individuals: Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30. Two others were rescued alive.
In a second incident at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School in Kurna, Fagge LGA, nine students were affected. While eight were rescued, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad died after being recovered unconscious.
Authorities have launched investigations into these incidents. The Kano State Fire Service has urged contractors, building owners, and residents to strictly adhere to safety precautions and approved building standards, particularly during the rainy season.
