Kano power outages caused by transmission line and transformer damage

Large parts of the Kano metropolis and several local government areas are experiencing power outages due to damage to the electrical transmission infrastructure.

One reported cause is damage to the 132kV Kumbotso–Dan’Agundi transmission line, which occurred after an earth-fault relay tripped during a windstorm. Engineers from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) identified broken conductors and leaning cross arms, requiring the circuit to be isolated for repairs.

Additionally, a transmission capacity deficit has been reported following a fault on a 40MVA 132/33KV power transformer at the 132KV Kwanar-Dangora transmission substation. This fault has specifically affected customers in Kura, Garun Malam, Kiru, Karaye, Rogo, Bebeji, Tudun Wada, and Doguwa Local Government Areas.

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) is working with TCN to replace equipment and restore normal supply, while seeking alternative power sources to minimize the impact on affected communities.
