Kano electricity infrastructure developments
Overview
In late September 2026, large parts of the Kano metropolis and several local government areas experienced power outages. These disruptions were caused by damage to the 132kV Kumbotso–Dan’Agundi transmission line following a windstorm, as well as a fault on a 40MVA transformer at the Kwanar-Dangora substation. The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) worked to replace equipment and restore supply.
By late October 2026, the Federal Ministry of Power and the Kano State Government commissioned four new transmission substations at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi. These upgrades added 544MW of wheeling capacity to the state power grid, aimed at relieving pressure on overloaded substations and meeting industrial, commercial, and residential demand. The improvements allowed for the reconnection of major industrial enterprises, such as the Lee Group, which had been operating off-grid for over 30 years, to the national grid. Additionally, the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation regained capacity to serve the Kano ancient town and the Emir’s Palace.
