Kansas City Chiefs look to manage Kenneth Walker III workload

The Kansas City Chiefs are considering ways to manage the workload of running back Kenneth Walker III following a dominant start to the season. Walker, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, currently leads the NFL in rushing yards (290), scrimmage yards (396), and total touches through the first two weeks.

Chiefs running backs coach DeMarco Murray noted that while Walker is difficult to take out of the game because he “likes the ball a lot,” the coaching staff intends to integrate rookie Emmett Johnson more frequently. Johnson has recorded 104 all-purpose yards on 14 touches so far this season.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy emphasized the importance of developing young players, stating the team wants to ensure Johnson is given opportunities to grow without being placed in detrimental situations. The team's strategy aims to balance the offense as quarterback Patrick Mahomes returns from a torn ACL injury sustained in 2025.
