Kaohsiung mayoral candidates clash over local agricultural support
The Kaohsiung mayoral election has seen a localized controversy after a video surfaced of candidate Ko Chih-en stating he wanted to eat ‘Pingtung bananas’ during an event in Qishan. Ko’s campaign office clarified that the remark was a casual comment made to staff while he was preparing to travel to Pingtung to dine with his family, and urged the public not to overinterpret the exchange.
In response, Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lai Jui-lung established a support group in Qishan, emphasizing his commitment to local agriculture by praising Qishan bananas as the best. Lai also introduced an ‘East Kaohsiung Grand Vision,’ a development plan aimed at transforming the region through improved transportation infrastructure, industrial support, and enhanced medical and cultural resources.
Supporters of Lai, including legislator Chiu Yi-ying, used the moment to highlight the importance of supporting Kaohsiung’s local farmers, contrasting the recent controversy with the necessity of championing regional products.
