Elazığ murder solved via X-ray footage as housing disputes rise

In Elazığ’s Karakoçan district, an investigation has revealed that an elderly couple, Ağa and Nimet Üykü, were murdered before their home was set on fire to disguise the crime. Autopsies confirmed the victims were shot in the chest. The Jandarma Crime Investigation Team (JASAT) identified the suspect, H. Ç., by tracking stolen jewelry through airport X-ray footage. The suspect was apprehended in Istanbul while attempting to sell the stolen items at a jeweler and has been arrested on charges of intentional murder and robbery.

Separately, residents in Malatya and İzmir are reporting significant grievances regarding housing and urban transformation projects. In Malatya, earthquake survivors in the Salköprü neighborhood are protesting the delayed delivery of TOKİ housing, noting that rental support has ceased and construction appears to have slowed.

In İzmir’s Karabağlar district, residents involved in urban transformation projects following the 2020 earthquake report severe hardships. Homeowners claim contractors have caused significant delays, provided substandard construction, and are demanding millions of additional liras in fees despite previous inflation adjustments. Meanwhile, officials stated that work on the Karabağlar TOKİ project has accelerated following legal delays, with a target completion date of summer 2027.
