Karlovac County hosts folklore festival and free river cinema

The 27th International Folklore Festival in Karlovac County wrapped up on Saturday after a week of performances by groups from Singapore, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Romania, Puerto Rico and Madagascar. Heavy rain forced the closing ceremony from the traditional outdoor venue to the indoor Sports Hall Mladost, prompting festival president Željko Štajcer to note the logistical challenges but affirm the event’s success. The festival also featured a gastronomic market offering cuisine from the participating countries, and the local Karlovac Folk Ensemble Matija Gubec prepared for an upcoming trip to Mexico. Organisers have already begun planning the 28th edition.

Meanwhile, the 16th edition of Riječno kino (River Cinema) launched on 17 July, offering seven free outdoor film evenings across Karlovac County until 29 August. Screenings are scheduled at locations such as the Duga Riječka amphitheatre, the Ozalj municipal pool, Foginovo pool in Karlovac, Bosiljevo, Saborsko and the courtyard of Ogulin’s Frankopan Castle. The program includes films like Lynne Ramsay’s drama “Umri, ljubavi”, the documentary “DJ Ahmet”, the music‑focused “Keltska utopija”, and comedies such as “Nasljedstvo s predumišljajem” and “Posljednji Viking”. All sessions are free to the public.
