Karnataka bans junk food sales in schools and nearby areas

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration issued an order under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 that prohibits the sale, free distribution, advertisement and promotion of high‑fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods inside school and college campuses and within a 50‑metre radius of these institutions. The ban, announced by Health Minister U. T. Khadar, follows inspections of 134 schools and colleges that found excessive refined carbohydrates and processed snacks being served to students. Schools must display warning signboards, remove HFSS items from menus and ensure that nearby vendors hold valid licences. Food Safety Officers will conduct regular inspections and violators face penalties up to ₹3 lakh, licence suspension, product seizure and judicial action. The order also mandates balanced meals comprising whole grains, pulses, millets, fruits, vegetables, milk and eggs, and the provision of safe drinking water.
