Overview

In early June 2026 Sri Lanka’s health ministry warned of rising obesity and, by mid‑June, banned high‑sugar, high‑fat and ultra‑processed foods from school canteens. The education ministry soon enforced the ban for roughly four million students, expanding the prohibited list to include burgers, pizza, ice‑cream, doughnuts, energy drinks and certain condiments, and prohibiting sponsorships from unhealthy‑food producers. Locally‑sourced recipes featuring rice, fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, fresh milk and natural juices were supplied to schools.

On 18 July 2026 Karnataka, India, announced a statewide prohibition on junk‑food sales in all schools and government hospitals, beginning with a pilot at a district hospital and backed by new food‑testing laboratories. Later that month the state’s Food Safety and Drug Administration inspected 134 schools and colleges, collecting samples and warning that violations could attract fines up to ₹300,000 or licence revocation.

On 30 July 2026 the Karnataka administration issued a formal order under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 that bans the sale, free distribution, advertisement and promotion of high‑fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods inside school and college campuses and within a 50‑metre radius. Schools must display warning signboards, remove HFSS items from menus, and ensure nearby vendors hold valid licences. Regular inspections will enforce compliance, with penalties of up to ₹3 lakh, licence suspension, product seizure and possible judicial action. The order also mandates balanced meals of whole grains, pulses, millets, fruits, vegetables, milk and eggs, and the provision of safe drinking water.
