Karnataka BJP’s Ballari Chalo padayatra intensifies political contest

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is conducting a 10-day ‘Ballari Chalo’ padayatra in Karnataka, a protest march that has evolved into a significant political contest with the ruling Congress party. The march, which began in Lingasugur on September 1 and is scheduled to conclude in Ballari on September 10, was initially focused on demanding the removal of B. Nagendra from the Cabinet following alleged irregularities in the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation.

Following Nagendra’s resignation, the BJP expanded the scope of the campaign to include broader criticisms of the Congress government, specifically targeting issues of corruption, drought, and farmer welfare. During the fifth day of the march, BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra felicitated retired teachers in Karatagi and criticized Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar’s response to drought conditions, arguing that aerial surveys cannot capture the true plight of struggling farmers.

The Congress government has responded by attempting to counter the BJP’s momentum, seeking to frame the government’s actions as independent of the street campaign and challenging the opposition's narrative.
