BJP concludes Ballari Chalo padayatra in Karnataka
Overview
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) initiated a 10-day, 170-km ‘Ballari Chalo’ padayatra in Karnataka to protest against the ruling Congress government. Led by State President B. Y. Vijayendra, the march began in Lingasugur on September 1 with the intent of targeting what the BJP describes as a corrupt administration that is “anti-people, anti-Dalit and anti-development.”
Initially, the protest focused on the resignation of former minister B. Nagendra amid misappropriation allegations. As the march progressed, the BJP expanded its criticisms to include the diversion of SCSP-TSP funds intended for Dalit development to finance government guarantee schemes. Vijayendra also highlighted an agrarian crisis, noting that 3,655 farmers in Karnataka have died by suicide over the last three years, and demanded the government waive crop loans of up to Rs 5 lakh in drought-hit areas.
By the end of the campaign on September 10, the march had covered approximately 180 kilometers. The padayatra concluded with a massive rally at the Old Municipal Ground in Ballari, expected to draw over 100,000 workers. The event featured high-profile leadership, including Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and V. Somanna, former Chief Ministers B. S. Yediyurappa and Basavaraj Bommai, and B. Y. Vijayendra. Due to the scale of the gathering and local tensions, authorities deployed over 1,200 police personnel, including specialized units, to manage security and traffic.
