Cauvery water dispute intensifies between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu

The Cauvery water-sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has escalated as both states face severe water scarcity. Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court, alleging a shortfall of 20 TMC of water and reporting significant losses to its Purvai Kharif crops. In response, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that the state will only release water if reservoir inflows allow, noting that rainfall has ceased and inflows have halted. The state government intends to appeal recent directives from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).

Simultaneously, Karnataka is grappling with a drought situation, having recorded a 36% rainfall deficit as of late September. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara defended the state's fiscal management against opposition claims of bankruptcy, clarifying that recent Finance Department advice was a matter of routine fiscal discipline rather than an indication of insolvency. He noted that Karnataka's fiscal deficit for 2026-27 is projected at 2.95%, within the prescribed limits.
