Karnataka declares school holidays amid heavy monsoon rains

Heavy monsoon rains across Karnataka prompted district administrations to close schools and Anganwadi centres on July 8, 2026. The District Collector of Belagavi, Mohammad Roshan, ordered holidays for all primary and high schools in Nippani and Khanapur taluks and the city and rural areas of Belagavi. Similar orders were issued in Shivamogga’s Hosanagar and Sagar taluks, and in Dakshina Kannada district, where the Deputy Commissioner announced a holiday for schools and pre‑university colleges. Authorities directed institutions to compensate for the lost days in the coming weeks.

The closures were taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard students from water‑logging, cold winds and thunderstorms. Rescue teams and disaster‑relief forces were also deployed in neighboring Maharashtra, which faced its own spell of heavy rain under an IMD orange alert.
