Karnataka's Mekedatu dam project meets Tamil Nadu opposition

Karnataka officials say the Mekedatu balancing reservoir is crucial for Bengaluru’s drinking‑water supply and will generate about 400 MW of power. Minister Sharan Prakash Patil asserted, “It is very clear now that the Mekedatu project is beneficial for both states… critical to mitigate the water supply crisis in Bengaluru.” Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy added that the state seeks only its allocated share of Cauvery water and emphasized, “We do not want even a single drop more than what has been allocated to Karnataka.”

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution opposing the dam, arguing that it violates the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and Supreme Court judgments and urging the Union government to withhold all technical and environmental clearances. Karnataka BJP leader B.Y. Vijayendra condemned the resolution as “highly condemnable” and called for a united defence of Karnataka’s water rights. Karnataka ministers said they are ready to discuss the issue with Tamil Nadu and seek the centre’s approval for the project.
