Karnataka voter list dispute sparks legal threats and political tension
Karnataka is facing political tension regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Chief Electoral Officer V. Ambukumar has ordered strict legal action under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, against individuals submitting fraudulent Form 7 applications to remove voters. The Commission emphasized that any punitive measures must follow thorough investigations mandated by the Voter Registration Rules, 1960.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has accused the opposition of a conspiracy to use fraudulent applications to target minority and marginalized communities. Conversely, BJP leaders, including BY Vijayendra and BS Yediyurappa, have met with police officials to demand the withdrawal of FIRs filed against party workers, claiming the applications were a legal right and the police actions are politically motivated.
Separately, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has requested 3,705.30 crore rupees in drought relief from the central government, noting that 217 out of 240 taluks in the state have been declared drought-affected. The Election Commission of India has also announced that the final voter list for Karnataka will be published on October 27, followed by a special voter registration drive.
