Karnataka pushes all‑party meeting over contested Mekedatu dam plan

State officials in Karnataka are calling for an all‑party meeting to address the Mekedatu dam project, which has faced opposition from Tamil Nadu. The central government, after a Supreme Court directive on a related Cauvery dispute, is being urged to intervene as Tamil Nadu seeks legal relief. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is advised by water‑resource experts to pressure Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Water Resources Ministry to secure approval for the dam, which is intended to generate power and store water for up to 38 districts. The project, involving an estimated five crore residents, has become a focal point of inter‑state tension, with calls for coordinated political action to resolve the legal and technical challenges.
