Karnataka pushes Mekedatu project to address Bengaluru water needs

The Karnataka government is intensifying efforts to secure approvals for the Mekedatu project to address growing drinking water demands in Bengaluru. Water Resources Minister N Chaluvarayaswamy recently met with the head of the Central Water Commission to advocate for faster progress on the project, which is planned across the Cauvery River.

The project remains a central point of contention in the long-standing Cauvery water dispute. While Karnataka argues the reservoir is essential for managing seasonal water resources and supporting a rapidly developing population, Tamil Nadu continues to oppose it. Tamil Nadu has expressed concerns regarding the potential reduction of water flow into its territory and the environmental impact on the river system.

In a related political development, Minister Chaluvarayaswamy engaged in a public dispute with Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy regarding the purpose of his recent visit to New Delhi. Chaluvarayaswamy clarified that his trip was intended to discuss irrigation issues, including the Mekedatu and Mahadayi projects, and challenged Kumaraswamy to a formal debate.
