Tamil Nadu files Supreme Court petition over Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka
The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, filed a petition in the Supreme Court on 3 August 2026 seeking directions to enforce the release of Cauvery water from Karnataka. The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee had directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs at Biligundlu from 29 July to 12 August 2026, a decision ratified by the Cauvery Water Management Authority on 30 July. Karnataka reported actual inflows of only 158–550 cusecs during the period, far below the order, while its reservoirs held a total of 77.537 TMC (67.517 TMC usable), indicating no shortage. Tamil Nadu claims entitlement to 26.954 TMC, considerably higher than the CWMA’s allocation of 4.536 TMC. BJP State Secretary Vinoj P Selvam criticised the Tamil Nadu government for failing to secure the water, and Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar noted that Tamil Nadu’s chief minister postponed a planned visit to Bengaluru because of the dispute.
