Karnataka observes mixed response to bandh over Cauvery water release
A statewide bandh in Karnataka, called by pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj and various organizations, saw a mixed response on August 13. The protest was triggered by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) directing the state to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
While intense protests and highway blockades were reported in Mandya and Koppal, major urban centers like Bengaluru and Mysuru remained largely unaffected. This was due to several Kannada organizations withdrawing their support for the shutdown. Consequently, essential services, banks, hospitals, and public transport continued to operate, and Kempegowda International Airport reported normal operations.
In response to the agitation, police detained Vatal Nagaraj and other organizers in preventive custody. The Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools (KAMS) also withdrew its earlier call for school closures, advising institutions to remain open while allowing staff to show symbolic solidarity by wearing black ribbons.
