Karnataka seeks Rs 7,142 crore in central drought relief

The Karnataka government has estimated drought-related losses of Rs 46,324.50 crore across 177 taluks following the Kharif 2026 season. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has sought a total of Rs 7,142.64 crore in financial assistance from the Central government under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) frameworks.

To address the crisis, a central inter-ministerial team led by Ajit Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has arrived in the state for a three-day assessment. The team will conduct on-the-spot inspections and review data to prepare an objective report on the drought conditions and crop damage.

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene urgently. Kharge requested that input subsidies for small and marginal farmers be calculated using updated Bhoomi land records rather than the 2015-16 Agriculture Census to ensure eligibility. He also called for immediate support for drinking water security and power costs due to low reservoir levels in the Cauvery basin.
