Karnataka to declare 101 taluks drought-hit

The Karnataka government is set to declare 101 taluks as drought-hit following a comprehensive assessment of rainfall deficits and ground conditions. Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister G Parameshwara stated that the decision follows reports from across the state, with an additional 32 taluks currently undergoing reassessment after meeting initial eligibility criteria.

Between June 1 and August 26, Karnataka recorded 465 mm of rain, representing a 30 per cent deficit compared to the normal 666 mm. The shortage has led to falling groundwater levels, deficient soil moisture, and significant crop losses. Under the Centre’s Drought Manual, 2020, the state identified 134 taluks that experienced dry spells lasting more than three consecutive weeks.

The state government has allocated Rs 635 crore for drought management to protect residents and livestock. Once the formal declaration is made, conditions in the affected taluks will be reviewed every 15 days. Parameshwara also noted that the government has requested the central government to revise existing assessment criteria to better address regional needs.
