Karpaty Tunnel project begins geological surveys in Slovakia
Preparatory works for the Karpaty Tunnel, a key component of the D4 motorway's northern bypass in Slovakia, have entered a significant geological and hydrogeological survey phase. The project involves conducting 170 drillings at various depths, reaching up to 350 meters below ground level, to map geological conditions and water regimes. This data will inform the tunnel's design and environmental protection measures.
The survey is expected to last three years, with water monitoring beginning after approximately one year. Geologists and hydrogeologists are expected to monitor the site for roughly 15 years. Minister of Transport Jozef Ráž stated that the works are being conducted according to a task designed by the Slovak Technical University and should not affect the residents of Borinka.
The planned 12.4-kilometer section between Rača and Záhorská Bystrica will feature an 11.76-kilometer tunnel, which would become the longest road tunnel in Slovakia. This strategic investment, estimated at approximately 1.7 billion euros, aims to divert up to 70 percent of current transit freight traffic away from Bratislava, reducing noise, dust, and air pollution in the capital.
