Overview

Slovakia continues to advance several major transport infrastructure projects, though progress varies between rapid completions and significant delays. In the rail sector, the SWIETELSKY Rail CZ and Elektrizace železnic Praha consortium is modernising the seven-kilometre Karlštejn–Beroun section.

A major milestone was reached on October 4 with the opening of the new 15-kilometre Hubová–Ivachnová section of the D1 highway. Serving as a bypass for Ružomberok, this stretch includes the 3.6-kilometre Čebrať Tunnel, 19 bridges, and three intersections. NDS Director General Filip Macháček noted the road is expected to be fully operational following police inspections, aiming to reduce transit traffic, noise, and smog in the city. The bypass is expected to save drivers several dozen minutes during peak hours.

Maintenance and emergency incidents continue to affect motorway travel. While the repair of the 561-meter Hybica Bridge on the D1 is complete, disruptions persist on the D3 motorway at the Čadečka Bridge, where a full closure between Svrčinovec and Skalité was required for approximately one week to replace bridge bearings and repair the roadway.

On October 8, the Višňové Tunnel on the D1 motorway (Lietavská Lúčka – Dubná Skala section) was closed in both directions following a car fire in the tube heading toward Martin. Traffic is being diverted via the I/18 road through the Strečianska narrows. This incident follows previously scheduled autumn maintenance for the tunnel, which included nighttime closures and a planned daytime closure from October 25 to October 28 to service safety systems.
