Karpenisi police arrest two men for attempted fraud

Two men were arrested in Karpenisi, Greece, after attempting to defraud an off-duty police officer by posing as an accountant. The suspects contacted the officer via telephone, claiming that money and jewelry needed to be recorded to avoid the imposition of fines.

Following the call, the officer alerted his department, and surveillance was placed on his residence. When the two suspects arrived in a vehicle to collect a bag of items intended to look like jewelry, police intercepted them. One man was apprehended inside the building while attempting to take the items, and his accomplice was arrested while acting as the driver.

Authorities seized two mobile phones, 196.50 euros, and the vehicle used in the crime. Additionally, police discovered two gold pieces hidden under the car's floor mat: a cat-shaped pin and an Athenian owl medallion. The driver was found to be operating the vehicle without a license, having previously had his driving privileges revoked for driving under the influence. The suspects have been referred to the Court of First Instance of Evrytania.
