Kars wastewater treatment project reaches 53% completion

The State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is advancing the construction of an advanced biological wastewater treatment plant in Kars. The project has reached a 53 percent physical completion rate.

Located in the Dereiçi area, approximately 2.5 kilometers from the city center, the facility is designed to handle a daily capacity of 50,000 cubic meters of wastewater. The project's design incorporates population projections through the year 2054. Key infrastructure, including the blower building, transformer and generator building, administrative building, and various aeration and bio-phosphorus pools, has completed its concrete work. Ongoing efforts focus on the sludge dewatering building, discharge flow meter room, and the construction of a 17.5-kilometer collector line.

Upon completion, which is targeted for 2027, the plant aims to significantly reduce pollution in the Kars River, a vital water source for the Kars Dam. This improvement in water quality is expected to benefit approximately 523,060 decares of agricultural land, including the Akyaka Plain and Kars Dam irrigation areas, by providing higher quality irrigation water.
