Kasaï province faces Mpox outbreak and yellow fever concerns

The Kasaï province is facing a significant health crisis involving the spread of Mpox and suspected cases of yellow fever. During the 44th meeting of the Provincial Council of Ministers in Tshikapa, officials reported 77 suspected Mpox cases across nine health zones, with 16 cases confirmed by the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

Luebo has been identified as the epicenter, recording 38 suspected cases, 13 confirmed cases, and three deaths. Mushenge follows with 13 suspected and three confirmed cases. Other affected areas include Kanzala, Mikope, Kalonda Ouest, Kamuesha, Kitangwa, Ndjoko-Punda, and Tshikapa.

In addition to Mpox, 11 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported in Kitangwa, Kalonda Ouest, Kanzala, and Tshikapa, though no deaths have been linked to yellow fever at this time.

Governor Chrispin Mukendi Bukasa has instructed the provincial Ministry of Health to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and improve patient care. Health officials are also urging the public to maintain strict hygiene, including frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with sick individuals or undercooked bushmeat, to curb the spread of the virus.
