Kastamonu forests see surge in mushroom abundance
Following recent heavy rainfall, forests in Kastamonu, Turkey, have experienced a significant increase in the abundance of kanlıca and tree mushrooms. Local residents have been heading into the forests to collect large quantities of mushrooms for both personal consumption and sale to local vendors.
The surge in supply has led to a notable decrease in market prices. The price of kanlıca mushrooms, which previously reached approximately 400 lira per kilogram, has dropped to as low as 50 lira due to the increased availability.
Collected mushrooms are being used for various culinary purposes, including making pickles, breads, and pastries, or are being preserved through freezing and canning for winter use. Local foragers report that while the abundance makes the activity enjoyable, some of the harvest has been affected by worms.
