Kastellorizo health services reinforced after doctor resignations and swift replacements

Greek Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistocleous announced measures to strengthen the National Health System, including free afternoon surgeries and increased hospital staffing. He addressed a recent incident on the island of Kastellorizo where two rural doctors resigned after a request for simultaneous leave was denied; the resignations were accepted and the doctors were replaced immediately.

The regional health administration clarified that it had no involvement in any later dispute and that a special general practitioner and an additional field doctor were deployed to ensure uninterrupted medical services on the island. The minister also highlighted broader recruitment successes, noting that many positions in the health system are now filled and waiting times for surgeries have been dramatically reduced, with over 50,000 additional procedures performed in 2025 compared with the previous year.
