Katerini police solve telephone fraud targeting elderly victim
Police in Katerini have solved a telephone fraud case involving a 77-year-old victim. The scam, which occurred in April 2026, utilized the ‘accountant’ method, where a perpetrator impersonated an accountant to claim the victim needed to hand over valuables to avoid tax fines.
Through this deception, the perpetrators obtained gold coins and jewelry valued at 5,000 euros. Authorities have identified a 19-year-old local man as a suspect and have seized the vehicle used during the crime, which was located in the Thessaloniki area.
An investigation is ongoing to identify an accomplice and determine if the individuals are involved in other similar crimes. The case file will be submitted to the Katerini Prosecutor. The Central Macedonia Police Directorate has issued warnings advising citizens not to trust strangers claiming professional identities over the phone or to hand over valuables to anyone claiming to be an associate of an accountant.
