Katherine Ampuero criticizes Lima mayoral candidacy shifts

Senator Katherine Ampuero of the Renovación Popular party has expressed discomfort regarding the political shifts within her party’s Lima mayoral candidacy. Following the resignation of Luis Rubio, party leader Rafael López Aliaga has emerged as the head of the electoral list, a move some have characterized as a “reelección encubierta” (disguised reelection).

Ampuero stated that Rubio should provide explanations to both party members and the general electorate regarding his withdrawal. While the party's National Executive Committee (CEN) cited personal reasons for Rubio's departure, Ampuero emphasized that the public deserves transparency due to the importance of the municipal office.

Additionally, Ampuero voiced her long-standing opposition to the prohibition of reelection for mayors and regional governors, arguing that citizens should have the constitutional right to choose and be elected.
