Kaunas approves plan for first tram line and transport terminals
The Kaunas City Council has approved an update to the Sustainable Mobility Plan, marking a new phase in the city's public transport development. The plan includes the design of the city's first tram line, which is intended to connect the high-traffic North Avenue with the city center.
A design competition for the tram line is expected to be announced soon, with the design process estimated to take approximately 18 months. The initial route is planned to run along North and Savanorių Avenues, while ensuring at least two lanes remain available for car traffic in both directions. The project aims to utilize European Union funds.
City officials, including Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis and Vice-Mayor Andrius Palionis, emphasized that the tram is intended to function as an integral part of the broader public transport system to increase speed and convenience. The project may also involve expanding the existing trolleybus base on North Avenue into a tram depot.
