Kaunas public transport network overhaul

Overview

The city of Kaunas is planning a major overhaul of its public transport network to improve efficiency and reliability. The city intends to move away from a fragmented system with overlapping routes toward a terminal-based model. This strategy involves establishing specialized transfer points in various micro-districts to increase vehicle frequency and reduce travel times. Under this structure, peripheral areas will be served by feeder routes that transport passengers to six transport terminals, where they will then transfer to high-frequency transit lines serving main corridors.

In addition to structural changes, the city is modernizing its payment systems. Starting December 1, Kaunas will phase out cash payments for public transport, meaning passengers will no longer be able to purchase bus and trolleybus tickets using cash from drivers. According to Kauno autobusai, cash transactions accounted for only 4.5 percent of trips in the first eight months of the year, a decrease of nearly one-third compared to the previous year. Currently, approximately 60 percent of passengers use public transport cards, while nearly 35 percent use the Žiogas mobile application.

Rimas Stankaitis, Transport Operations Director at Kauno autobusai, stated that cash payments slow down passenger flow, noting that the time required for drivers to accept cash and provide change can turn seconds into minutes at busy stops. The city has already expanded electronic options, including contactless bank card payments for single tickets as of September.

Further long-term plans include the design of the city’s first tram line to connect North Avenue with the city center. This project aims to utilize European Union funds and is intended to function as an integral part of the broader system to increase speed and convenience.
