Kaunas District introduces cheaper public transport and 'Žiogas' system

Starting December 1, residents of the Kaunas district will benefit from significant public transport cost reductions and the implementation of the 'Žiogas' electronic ticketing system. The Kaunas District Municipality Council has approved a new pricing structure designed to make public transit more financially attractive as the region grows.

Under the new system, residents who link their 'Žiogas' card or mobile app to their residency status via the 'Kaunas District' app can travel for 0.70 EUR per trip, a 53 percent reduction from the standard 1.50 EUR electronic ticket price. Statutory discounts of 50 and 80 percent will also remain applicable.

To support frequent commuters, the municipality introduced a monthly cap: after paying for 40 trips within a calendar month, all subsequent trips for that month will be free. The 'Žiogas' system is compatible with both Kaunas District and Kaunas City public transport. Physical cards can be obtained for free at district elderships or purchased at the Kaunas bus station.
