Kaunas regional utility and service changes
Overview
In late 2026, the Kaunas region implemented several changes to utility and public service costs. In October, heating prices in Kaunas, the Kaunas district, and Jurbarkas were set at 7.24 cents per kWh, a slight decrease from the previous year. Kauno energija attributed this reduction to infrastructure investments totaling 8.7 million euros and improved operational efficiency.
Following these utility adjustments, the Kaunas District Municipality Council approved a new public transport pricing structure and the ‘Žiogas’ electronic ticketing system, effective December 1. The new system allows residents to access a 53 percent reduction in trip costs by linking their residency status to the ‘Žiogas’ card or mobile app. Additionally, the municipality introduced a monthly cap where trips become free after 40 paid journeys.
