Kaunas plans public transport overhaul and regional route expansions

The city of Kaunas is planning a major overhaul of its public transport network to improve efficiency and reliability. Moving away from a fragmented system with overlapping routes, the city intends to implement a terminal-based model. This strategy aims to increase vehicle frequency and reduce travel times by establishing specialized transfer points in various micro-districts.

Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that while the city has modernized its bus and trolleybus fleet over the last decade, the focus is now shifting toward optimizing the route network. The proposed changes are part of an updated mobility plan intended to make public transit more accessible and convenient for residents.

In related regional developments, the bus carrier Kautra is expanding its service offerings starting September 4. New routes will connect major cities with smaller towns, including new connections from Telšiai to Kaunas via several intermediate stops, and from Vilnius to Lazdijai via Alytus. These new services are designed to provide better connectivity for passengers traveling to and from smaller municipalities.
