Kaunas State Musical Theatre to premiere ‘Shrek’ musical

The Kaunas State Musical Theatre will launch its 2026–2027 season with the premiere of the musical ‘Shrek’ on October 2. Described as one of the most expensive and technically complex productions in the theatre's history, the show is based on William Steig’s book and the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film.

The production features advanced stagecraft, including custom constructions, complex decorations, masks, puppetry, video projections, fire effects, and a large, moving dragon capable of interacting with the audience. The musical features a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori.

Directed by Kęstutis Jakštas, the production aims to appeal to both children and adults by exploring themes of friendship, love, self-discovery, and acceptance. In addition to this premiere, the upcoming season will include over twenty different productions across various genres, artist anniversaries, and regional tours by the ballet troupe.
