Kaunas State Musical Theatre Shrek premiere

Overview

The Kaunas State Musical Theatre is set to launch its 2026–2027 season with the premiere of the musical ‘Shrek’ on October 2. The production is described as one of the most expensive and technically complex in the theatre’s history, utilizing advanced stagecraft such as puppetry, video projections, fire effects, and a large, moving dragon designed to interact with the audience.

Directed by Kęstutis Jakštas, the musical is based on the book by William Steig and the DreamWorks Animation film, featuring music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. The production aims to explore themes of friendship, love, self-discovery, and acceptance to appeal to both children and adults. The upcoming season will also include over twenty other productions and regional tours by the ballet troupe.
