Kaunas to phase out cash payments for public transport
Kaunas is planning to phase out cash payments for public transport. Starting December 1, passengers will no longer be able to purchase bus and trolleybus tickets using cash from drivers.
According to Kauno autobusai, cash transactions currently account for less than 5 percent of all trips. Data from the first eight months of the year shows that cash payments made up only 4.5 percent of trips, a decrease of nearly one-third compared to the previous year. Currently, approximately 60 percent of passengers use public transport cards, while nearly 35 percent use the Žiogas mobile application.
Rimas Stankaitis, Transport Operations Director at Kauno autobusai, stated that cash payments slow down passenger flow. He noted that the time required for drivers to accept cash and provide change can turn seconds into minutes at busy stops, ultimately increasing total travel time. The city has already expanded electronic options, including the ability to purchase single tickets with contactless bank cards as of September.
