Greece dismantles criminal networks using AI and impersonation for phone fraud

Greek authorities have dismantled several criminal networks involved in sophisticated telephone fraud operations across Attica and Kavala.

In Attica, police raided a rented house in Spata used as a ‘call center’ by a criminal organization. The group, consisting of members aged 17 to 21, targeted elderly citizens by posing as utility employees. They claimed there were electrical leaks to induce fear, instructing victims to leave cash and jewelry in designated spots. This group is linked to at least 889 attempted thefts and over 240,000 euros in illicit gains.

Another major investigation revealed a network using Artificial Intelligence to clone voices. Scammers would pose as service providers to obtain voice samples from relatives, then use AI-generated voices to convince victims to authorize fraudulent transactions. This operation in Nea Ionia resulted in the arrest of two individuals and uncovered damages exceeding one million euros.

In Kavala, two women were arrested for participating in a scheme where perpetrators posed as doctors and police officers. They used the pretext of medical emergencies or ongoing police operations to coerce victims into handing over valuables. Authorities continue to search for the remaining accomplices in these cases.
