Kawhi Leonard signs $115 million extension with Toronto Raptors

Kawhi Leonard has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Toronto Raptors worth $115 million, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season. The 35-year-old forward, a two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP, intends to finish his career in Toronto.

The extension follows Leonard's recent return to the Raptors via a trade from the Los Angeles Clippers. The trade, which included Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, was delayed until September due to an NBA investigation into salary cap circumvention by the Clippers. The league found that the Clippers had used sponsorship agreements to provide undisclosed compensation to Leonard.

As a result of the investigation, the Clippers faced significant penalties, including a $30 million fine, the loss of five first-round draft picks, and a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer. Leonard was fined $700,000 but received no suspension. To facilitate the move and provide salary cap flexibility for Toronto, Leonard reportedly accepted $11 million less than the maximum allowable extension and waived a $7.45 million trade bonus.
