NBA imposes heavy sanctions on Clippers for cap violations
Overview
The NBA has concluded its investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers, issuing severe sanctions after determining the organization facilitated improper off-court income for Kawhi Leonard. The league found that Leonard and his business manager, Dennis Robertson, violated rules by “pressuring the Clippers to assist him in obtaining off-court income opportunities” through endorsement deals with companies tied to the team, such as Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance.
As a result, the NBA has imposed a $30 million fine on the franchise and stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033. Owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended from all league and team activities for one year, while Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension without pay. President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank has been suspended without pay for six months.
Kawhi Leonard was ordered to pay $700,000 in restitution but will not face a suspension or contract cancellation. Dennis Robertson has received a five-year ban from conducting business with NBA teams. Following these developments, reports indicate a potential trade will move Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. The proposed deal involves Toronto sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, multiple first-round and second-round picks, and a first-round pick swap to Los Angeles. Leonard has reportedly expressed a desire to move forward with a “clean slate” regarding the situation.
The Clippers have vehemently rejected the findings, labeling the investigation biased and announcing intentions to challenge the penalties through legal and arbitration channels.
