Turkey blocks 6,644 social‑media accounts for terrorism and disinformation
In a coordinated operation led by the Presidency Communication Presidency together with the Police Cyber Crime Department, public prosecutors and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), Turkish authorities imposed access bans on 6,644 social‑media accounts over the previous seven months. Technical examinations, digital‑network analysis and forensic procedures identified 3,679 accounts linked to the FETÖ movement or its affiliates, and another 2,965 accounts that promoted terrorism, spread false information or carried out psychological‑war activities against Turkey.
The platform receiving the most bans was X (formerly Twitter); the following platforms, in descending order, were Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify. The coordination mechanism monitored trend‑topic lists, hashtag campaigns, coordinated sharing networks and bot activity in real time, and applied legal and administrative measures to close the accounts. Officials said the effort shows that digital platforms are now a field of national‑security concern, not merely a communications tool.
