Kazakhstan President appoints new Vice President and reappoints Prime Minister
Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced major leadership appointments following recent constitutional changes. Olzhas Bektenov has been reappointed as Prime Minister, a position he has held since February 2024. His candidacy received support from 137 deputies during the Kurultai session in Astana.
Additionally, Tokayev appointed Erlan Karin, a longtime presidential adviser, to the newly created office of Vice President. Under the country's new constitutional model, the Vice President is positioned as the first in line to succeed the president.
The appointments follow the adoption of a new constitution and the establishment of the Kurultai as the supreme advisory body. Recent elections for the Kurultai saw a voter turnout of approximately 74.08%.
