KDE Plasma 6.8 expands Union theming to QtWidgets apps
KDE developers are expanding the Union theming system in the upcoming Plasma 6.8 release, scheduled for October 14, 2026. This update introduces support for traditional QtWidgets applications, allowing them to share a consistent visual style with newer interfaces built using QML and Kirigami.
While the Union engine aims to provide a unified, CSS-based aesthetic across the KDE ecosystem, developers note that the QtWidgets implementation is in its early stages and may contain visual glitches.
Beyond theming, Plasma 6.8 includes several technical improvements. The built-in RDP server can now automatically adjust image quality based on network bandwidth to maintain frame rates, and screen-casting latency in Plasma and KWin has been reduced by one frame. KWin also receives graphics optimizations for Intel and NVIDIA GPUs, including improved efficiency for full-screen content and support for the HLG transfer function in HDR. Other updates include improved touchpad gestures for the Overview effect and enhanced clipboard security for sensitive content.
