KDE Plasma 6.8 released, transitioning to Wayland-only
Overview
KDE’s desktop environment progressed through mid‑2026, with the 6.7 series launching on 16 June 2026. Subsequent point releases addressed Wayland stability, NVIDIA triple buffering, and AMD GPU display corruption. In early September, it was announced that Plasma 6.8 would officially remove the X11 session, leaving Wayland as the sole option. During the development of Plasma 6.8, several usability and safety features were introduced. These included a tenfold increase in panel auto-hide speed, multilingual search in System Settings, and a new autostart toggle to disable startup entries without deletion. To prevent session failures, KWin implemented stricter resolution selection limits. Other refinements included GPU-reset notifications, improved screenshot performance, and memory optimizations for the Discover software center. Prior to its release, developers expanded the Union theming system to include support for traditional QtWidgets applications, aiming for a consistent CSS-based aesthetic, though early implementation may contain visual glitches. Technical improvements also included an RDP server that adjusts image quality based on bandwidth and reduced screen-casting latency. On 14 October 2026, KDE officially released Plasma 6.8, marking its 30th anniversary and the official discontinuation of X11 sessions. While legacy applications can still function via the XWayland compatibility layer, the transition removes certain features like window shading and alters how saved sessions and window positioning behave. The release includes NVIDIA triple buffering enabled by default, improved HDR support following ICC color profiles, and a revamped System Monitor that allows pinning processes to specific CPU cores. Additionally, the Spectacle tool now supports recording system audio and microphone input. Concurrently, KDE launched Plasma 6.6.7, the first maintenance update for its new Long-Term Support (LTS) series. This follows the ‘Bullet-Proof KDE Initiative’, which extends maintenance for the Plasma 6.6 series for three years to provide stability for users, specifically targeting Kubuntu 26.04 LTS.
