KDE Plasma 6.8 Improves External GPU Speed, Adds Virtual Screens
KDE announced that the upcoming Plasma 6.8 desktop environment, slated for release in mid‑October 2026, includes major performance upgrades for systems using external GPUs. By redesigning the KWin compositor to render directly on the GPU attached to each monitor and switching the multi‑GPU copy path to Vulkan, benchmarks show up to an 82 % speed increase in demanding applications such as Cyberpunk 2077 on laptops with eGPU enclosures.
The update also restores triple buffering for NVIDIA cards, refines monitor positioning, and introduces resizable virtual screens for screencasting. Users can now adjust virtual display resolution, move screens pixel‑by‑pixel with the keyboard, and change emoji size in the selector. Additional tweaks cover Spectacle’s image‑quality options, fixes for large screenshot corruption, clearer remote‑desktop instructions, and support for dedicated phone‑call keys on keyboards.
KDE developer Xaver Hugl highlighted that the changes target the inefficient data transfers that previously limited multi‑GPU setups, aiming to deliver smoother UI animations and better overall stability for Linux users.
