KDE Plasma to transition to Wayland-only with version 6.8

KDE is implementing significant structural changes to its Plasma desktop environment. The upcoming Plasma 6.8 release, scheduled for October 14, will be the first to remove the X11 login session entirely. While legacy X11 applications will continue to function via Xwayland, the desktop will move to a Wayland-only model to streamline development and move away from the limitations of older windowing systems.

In a separate long-term development initiative, KDE is working on a dedicated troubleshooting safe mode slated for release in Q4 2026. This feature, supported by a grant of over €1.2 million from Germany’s Sovereign Tech Agency, will allow users to boot a stripped-down session with third-party customizations disabled. The goal is to provide a guided diagnostic approach to repair broken desktop environments, such as crashing widgets or theme conflicts, without requiring users to manually edit configuration files via a terminal.
