Kefalonia lifeguard saves seven swimmers, including two children, at Abythos beach

On Friday, 3 July, sudden strong waves and currents at Abythos beach on the island of Kefalonia threatened seven swimmers, two of whom were children. Sofia Kaspiri, a lifeguard from Patras with nursing training and three years of rescue experience, entered the water repeatedly and managed to bring all seven individuals safely back to shore. The rescue operation lasted about two and a half hours, from roughly 14:00 to 16:30, and concluded without any injuries or need for medical treatment. Witnesses praised Kaspiri’s calm professionalism and noted that beach‑café children also assisted by entering the water to help.

The incident highlights the hazards that can arise even on popular, family‑friendly beaches during the summer and underscores the importance of trained lifeguards on organized coastlines.
