Mediterranean youth water rescues
Entities: Hippocrates Hospital (Thessaloniki) · Kefalonia · 12-year-old boy · EKAB (Emergency Services) · Coast Guard (Limeniko Soma)
Overview
Since mid‑June 2026 a series of water‑related emergencies involving children and teenagers has unfolded across the Mediterranean, each resolved by swift action from by‑standers, police, lifeguards or volunteers.
Incidents have ranged from a teenage girl rescued from a pool suction system in Milazzo, Italy (13 June) to a 14‑year‑old saved from the Maritsa River in Bulgaria (2 July). Notable rescues include lifeguard Sofia Kapsiri’s two‑and‑a‑half‑hour effort to save seven beachgoers at Abythos beach, Kefalonia (3 July), and the joint rescue of a 2½‑year‑old girl by Athena Horomidi and Thanasis Economou at Polichrono beach, Halkidiki (24 July).
On 25 July a 2‑year‑old German boy was found unconscious in a private pool in the Apokoronas district of Chania, Crete. His mother, a medical doctor, performed five minutes of CPR before EKAB responders arrived. He was first taken to the General Hospital of Rethymno, then intubated and transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University General Hospital of Heraklion, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Police and health authorities continue investigating the circumstances.
On 29 July lifeguards Sofia Kegagioglu and Antonis Volfis rescued a 12‑year‑old boy who began to drown at a Chalkidiki beach. After delivering oxygen and rescue breaths, they handed him to EKAB, which transported him to the medical centre in Kassandria and then to Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki, where his condition stabilised. It was the third child saved in the Kassandria area within a week, according to the NGO Children Save Lives.
Authorities continue to stress adherence to safety warnings, conduct investigations where needed, and note a decline in sea‑related deaths compared with the same period in 2025.
