Kehlsteinhaus Eagle’s Nest fire devastates historic Nazi-era retreat
A major fire has severely damaged the Kehlsteinhaus, a historic mountain retreat known as the ‘Eagle’s Nest’ in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden. The fire was reported on Friday evening, October 23, 2026, after a smoke detector triggered an alarm at approximately 9:50 pm local time.
Approximately 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed to combat the blaze. The remote location, situated at an altitude of roughly 1,834 meters, significantly complicated firefighting efforts, requiring crews to use heavy breathing apparatus to access the building. While the structure was described as being ‘completely ablaze,’ authorities reported that no injuries occurred as the building was empty at the time.
German police have detained a 33-year-old German man in connection with the incident. The suspect, who was reportedly traveling on a motorcycle near the scene, is under investigation. While a specific motive has not been confirmed, investigators are examining the possibility of arson. The building, which was completed in 1938 and served as a Nazi-era guest house, has operated as a restaurant and historical site since 1952.
